CEREBRUM

What is the Cerebrum?

CEREBRUM
The Cerebrum is the main part of the brain - the Grey Matter which has many folds.
The Cerebrum is where the higher functions of the brain, such as vision and thought occur.

SPLEEN

What is the Spleen?

SPLEEN
The Spleen is an organ positioned behind the left rib cage.
The Spleen is part of the Lymphatic system and filters the blood of microorganisms as well as old and damaged blood cells.

HORMONE

What are Hormones?

HORMONE
Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body.
Indocrine Hormones are molecules which travel through the bloodstream and trigger specific events in various locations in the body.
Some hormone sources are the Pituitary gland, the Thyroid gland, the Pancreas and the Adrenal glands.

ARTERY

What is an Artery?

ARTERY
An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
The Aorta is a large artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
The Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.

VEIN

What is a Vein?

VEIN
Veins are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from the rest of the body.
The Pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
The Vena Cavae are large veins that carry deoxygenated blood into the heart.

TRIVIA

🔔 QUESTION : In Anatomical books, what color are arteries and what color are the veins?

💡 Hover or Tap for the ANSWER! 💡

The arteries are red to indicate blood full of oxygen (oxygenated) and the veins are blue to indicate blood empty of oxygen (deoxygenated).

SYNAPSE

What is a Synapse?

SYNAPSE
A Synapse is a small gap between adjacent nerve cells (Neurons).
Nerve impulses travel the gap between nerve cells through the use of chemicals called Neurotransmitters.
The neurotransmitter is emitted by one neuron and absorbed by the neighboring neuron to pass the impulse on.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

What is the Lymphatic System?

The Lymphatic System works to drain waste from the body's cells.
The Lymphatic System consists of Lymph Nodes connected with Lymph Vessels (Lymphatics).
The Lymph vessels are filled with a fluid called Lymph composed of water and waste to be removed.
The Lymph nodes are filters filled with white blood cells that trap and neutralize the germs in the Lympth fluid.

BLOOD

What is Blood?

BLOOD
Blood is a fluid that is pumped by the heart and carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body.
Blood also carries carbon dioxide and waste from the cells.
Blood is composed of a liquid called plasma containing red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

TISSUE

What is Tissue?

TISSUE
Tissue is what one calls the material composed of the same types of cells.
Muscle is a tissue made of muscle cells and nerves are the tissue made of nerves cells.
An important type of tissue is Connective Tissue which consists of special cells and long fibers of protein embedded within a matrix.
Bones and blood are examples of connective tissue.
