Weather & Meteorology in Point Form

ANEMOMETER

What is an Anemometer?

ANEMOMETER
An Anemometer is a mechanical instrument used to measure the speed of the wind.

LAND BREEZE

What is a Land Breeze?

LAND BREEZE
A Land Breeze is a breeze that blows from land to water during the night.
Due to the land cooling faster than the water, warmer air from the water rises and cool air from the land flows in.

SEA BREEZE

What is a Sea Breeze?

SEA BREEZE
A Sea Breeze is a breeze that blows from water to land during daytime.
Due to the land heating faster than the water, warmer land air rises and cool air from the water flows in.

TORNADOES

What are Tornadoes?

TORNADOES
Tornadoes are concentrated and deep areas of low pressure. They are circular whirlpools that develop during severe thunderstorms. The air pressure is lowest in the center of the tornado.

DUST DEVILS

What are Dust Devils?

DUST DEVILS
Dust Devils are local low pressure areas that occur on hot dry days over land. The hot air rises and cool air fills in below, producing the circulation.

HYGROMETER

What is a Hygrometer?

HYGROMETER
An Hygrometer is an instrument used to measure the moisture content of air.

AIR MASS

What is an Air Mass?

AIR MASS
Air Masses are large areas within the Troposphere with uniform temperature and water vapour, much like an Air Parcel.
Continental Air Masses form over land and contain dry air.
Maritime Air Masses form over water and contain humid air.

FRONTS

What are Fronts?

FRONTS
The zone or boundary where two different air masses meet is called a Front.
Changes in weather occur where the Fronts interact along their boundaries.
Types of Fronts include the Warm Front, the Cold Front, the Stationary Front and the Occluded Front.

FOG

What is Fog?

FOG
Fog is a cloud resting on the ground and forms when the air cools below the dewpoint.
Types of fog include Radiation Fog, Steam Fog and Ice Fog.

ANEROID BAROMETER

What is an Aneroid Barometer?

ANEROID BAROMETER
An aneroid barometer is a mechanical instrument used for measuring air pressure and does not use a liquid.
An aneroid barometer uses metal disks and springs within a vacuum.

OCCLUSION

What is an Occlusion?

OCCLUSION
Occlusion is a term used in Meterology meaning the lifting of a warm air mass by a cold air mass.

RADIOSONDE

What is a Radiosonde?

RADIOSONDE
A Radiosonde is a weather instrument carried by ballon to the upper atmosphere to broadcast by radio current weather conditions.
