Atomic & Nuclear Physics in Point Form

ELECTRON

What are Electrons?

ELECTRON
The Electron is a negatively charged particle and a main component of the atom.
The Electron is the particle that is involved in chemical reactions and electrical conduction in metals.
The Electron determines the chemical properties and bonding behaviour of an Element.
The Electron is classified as a Lepton in particle physics.

TRIVIA

🔔 QUESTION : True or False? The Electron has been shown to have both particle and wave properties?

💡 Hover or Tap for the ANSWER! 💡

True. The Electron has been shown to have both particle and wave properties.

PROTON

What are Protons?

PROTON
The proton is a positively charged particle and a main component of the atomic nucleus.
The proton determines the type of Element and its Atomic Number.

POSITRON

What are Positrons?

POSITRON
The positron is the positive equivalent of the Electron.
The positron is not common in the Universe but occurs in Pair production involving a photon.

NEUTRON

What are Neutrons?

NEUTRON
The Neutron is a particle with no electric charge (neutral).
The Neutron is part of every atomic nucleus except Hydrogen.
The Neutron is used to produce Nuclear Fission Chain Reactions.

ATOM

What are Atoms?

ATOM
Atoms are are the fundamental componemts of all Elements.
Each different element is made from different atoms.
Atoms are composed of sub-atomic particles called Electrons, Protons and Neutrons.
Water is a molecule made from two atoms - Hydrogen and Oxygen.

CLOUD CHAMBER

What is a Cloud Chamber?

CLOUD CHAMBER
A Cloud Chamber is an instrument used to detect Cosmic Rays and radiation particles.
A Cloud Chamber uses supersaturated vapour which ionizes as particles pass through it, making their tracks visible as the vapour condenses along the particle path.

ELEMENT

What are Elements?

ELEMENT
Elements are what groups of individual atoms form and have unique names.
The Elements are classified in the Periodic Table.

ISOTOPE

What are Isotopes?

ISOTOPE
Isotopes are the same element having the same number of Electrons and Protons, but have different numbers of Neutrons.
Deuterium is a Hydrogen atom with a neutron in the nucleus.

MOLECULE

What are Molecules?

MOLECULE
Molecules are formed by two or more atoms chemically bonded together through their electrons.
Some atoms naturally form molecules of themselves, such as Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen.
Sucrose is a molecule made from two sugar molecules - Glucose and Frutcose.

RADIOACTIVITY

What is Radioactivity?

RADIOACTIVITY
Radioactivity is the spontaneous disintegration of unstable atoms.
Radioactive emissions include Alpha particles, Beta particles and Gamma rays.
Radon gas is a common radioactive element that occurs in nature.

CYCLOTRON

What is a Cyclotron?

CYCLOTRON
A Cyclotron is a charged particle accelerator that uses the combined action of Electric and Magnetic Fields.
The Cyclotron consists of two slightly separated sections under vacuum (Dees) which accelerate charged particles each time they cross the gap.
An electromagnet generates the magnetic field and a high frequency voltage generates the electric field.
