Atomic & Nuclear Physics in Point Form

QUARKS

What are Quarks?

QUARKS
Quarks are theoretical elementary particles that make up some subatomic particles.

PAIR PRODUCTION

What is Pair Production?

PAIR PRODUCTION
Pair Production is the spontaneous creation of a subatomic particle and its antiparticle from a neutral subatomic particle.
The creation of an electron and positron pair from a photon is an example of Pair Production.

FLUORESCENCE

What is Fluorescence?

FLUORESCENCE
Fluorescence is the emission of visible light by a chemical after that chemical has absorbed higher energy light such as ultraviolet light.
The light emitted with Fluorescence is emitted immediately after absorption.
The emitted light in Fluorescence is due to transitions between atomic energy levels with a photon being generated.

ANNIHILATION

What is Annihilation?

ANNIHILATION
Annihilation occurs when a subatomic particle collides with its respective antiparticle and produces other subatomic particles.
The annihilation of an electron with a positron produces a photon particle.

NUCLEAR FUSION

What is Nuclear Fusion?

NUCLEAR FUSION
Nuclear Fusion occurs when two lighter nuclei collide and form a heavier stable nucleus with the release of energy.
Fusion nuclear bombs function on the principle of nuclear fusion.
Nuclear Fusion occurs naturally in the Sun.

NUCLEAR FISSION

What is Nuclear Fission?

NUCLEAR FISSION
Nuclear Fission occurs when an unstable atomic nucleus breaks apart into multiple nuclei releasing neutrons and energy.
Fission nuclear bombs function on the principle of nuclear fission.
Nuclear Fission is the basis of Nuclear Reactors used to generate electricity.

ENERGY AS MASS

Is Energy equivalent to Mass?

ENERGY AS MASS
Mass can be converted into Energy, with Energy being the ability to do work or make change.
Mass is measured as Energy in Nuclear Physics.
The famous equation E=mc2 was proposed by Albert Einstein.

PHOSPHORESCENCE

What is Phosphorescence?

PHOSPHORESCENCE
Phosphorescence is the emission of visible light by a chemical after that chemical has absorbed higher energy light such as ultraviolet light.
With Phosphorescence, the light is emitted over time, which is how Glow-in-the-Dark materials work.
The emitted light in Phosphorescence is due to transitions between atomic energy levels with a photon being generated.

PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT

What is the Photoelectric Effect?

PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT
The Photoelectric Effect is basically electrons being knocked out of certain metals while illuminated with light.
The Photoelectric Effect could only be explained using the Photon particle concept described by Albert Einstein.
The Photoelectric Effect is basically how Solar Cells function - light frees electrons which can then travel through an electric circuit.

BUBBLE CHAMBER

What is a Bubble Chamber?

BUBBLE CHAMBER
A Bubble Chamber is an instrument used to detect Cosmic Rays and radiation particles.
A Bubble Chamber uses superheated fluid which vaporizes as charged particles pass through it, making their tracks visible as bubbles along the particle path.

PLANCK'S CONSTANT AND ENERGY QUANTIZATION

What is Energy Quantization?

PLANCK'S CONSTANT AND ENERGY QUANTIZATION
Energy Quantization was introduced by Max Planck to help explain Blackbody Radiation.
Energy Quantization means energy and radiation is absorbed and emitted as individual quantized oscillators rather than as waves.
Planck's Constant, h, is the proportionality constant for Radiation Energy. The expression is E=hf.
